What common RV jobs cost in Harlingen

Skylight removal and replacement runs $300 to $500. Awning fabric replacement runs $400 to $750. Those are the ranges we quote for those two jobs. Call and we'll give you a typical range on the phone, and we confirm the exact number once we've seen your rig. Other work, like water damage, exterior wall repair or appliance trouble, depends on what the diagnosis turns up. We won't guess at a figure before we've found the fault. When we do quote, it's in writing, with parts and labor listed separately.

Why RV repair costs what it does

An RV is a house, a vehicle and a 12-volt electrical system built into one shell, and a fault in one often shows up in another. Following a problem across all three takes time, and the diagnosis is usually the longer part of the job. The repair itself is often simple. Parts add to the bill too. RV appliances are made in smaller runs than household models, so replacements cost more and can take longer to get. Our seasonal temperature swings add wear. Seals, roof membranes and awning fabric expand and contract with the weather, which is why skylights start leaking and fabric cracks along its fold lines. Any quote that skips the diagnosis is probably leaving the real cost for later.

What moves your price within a range

Three things decide where a quote lands. The first is how far the damage goes. If your awning needs fabric and the roll tube and mounting hardware are sound, you're at the low end. Bent or corroded hardware gets replaced too, and the number goes up. The second is the rig. A bigger RV takes more fabric and more time. The third is the roof. If the membrane around a skylight is damaged, we repair it using the RV manufacturer's procedure before any new sealant goes on. That adds labor, but sealant over a bad membrane won't hold. We tell you what we found and what it added to the price.

Is it expensive to fix an RV

Per repair, it can cost more than a comparable house repair, mostly because of the parts and the time it takes to trace a fault. Careful diagnosis can also save you money. Take a refrigerator that isn't cooling. Before we call the cooling unit dead, we check that the fridge is level and properly ventilated, because an absorption unit works poorly when either is off. We also put a manometer on the gas test point to check LP pressure. Dometic's manual calls for 11 inches of water column there. A level adjustment or a pressure fix costs far less than a new cooling unit, and we only recommend the expensive repair once the cheaper causes are ruled out.

What we do when you call

Call us and we'll talk through the problem and give you a typical range if it's a job we price regularly. Then we come out and look at the rig ourselves. Phone descriptions are often off, and what sounds like one fault turns out to be another once we can see it. We find the actual cause and give you a written quote. If we spot something else while we're there, we tell you whether it can wait or will cause trouble. You decide, and when you book we come back and do the work.

What to Expect

Along the way, expect steps like these:

  • Check RV refrigerator supply voltage, fuse, wiring, switch, and thermostat when diagnosing a no-operation complaint.
